Oyo is a historic town in Oyo State in southwest Nigeria, north of Ibadan, set on gently rolling land where forest gives way to savanna. It is the seat of the Alaafin, the traditional ruler whose title goes back to the Oyo Empire, one of the most powerful states in West African history. From above, the town spreads outward from its old core in a loose, low-rise pattern.
The present town was established in the nineteenth century, after the old imperial capital far to the north was abandoned. The Alaafin's palace and its grounds remain at the heart of the town, and main roads lead out toward Ibadan, Ogbomosho and Iseyin. Oyo is also known for its craftspeople, especially the carvers of decorated calabashes.
