Kongoussi is the capital of Bam Province in north-central Burkina Faso. It lies near the southern end of Lake Bam, one of the country's few natural lakes. On a map, the town is a cluster of streets and compounds near the water, with roads leading out across open, gently rolling country toward nearby villages and the wider Sahel region.
The lake shapes life here. Its shores are used for market gardening, and the water level changes with the seasons, so the shoreline you see on any map shows a single moment. Beyond the town, the land is mostly farmland and scrub, crossed by tracks and seasonal streams that run toward the lake.
