Konstantynów Łódzki lies immediately west of Łódź, in central Poland, on the small Ner river. From above, it reads as the outer end of a larger urban area: town streets gathered around the river valley, and residential districts and open land stretching toward the edge of the city of Łódź.
The town developed in the nineteenth century during the boom of the Łódź textile industry, and weaving and cloth-making shaped its early growth. The Ner and its low valley, with wet meadows and ponds, still divide parts of the town and give the map a natural line through otherwise straight streets.
