Płock stands on a steep escarpment that rises high above the Vistula. The oldest part of town is gathered along the edge of this bluff, and from above you can see the historic streets running parallel to the river. Further from the water, the pattern opens into later districts, housing estates and green belts that stretch inland across flatter ground.
Tumski Hill, at the edge of the escarpment, holds the cathedral and what remains of the castle. Płock was the capital of Poland in the late eleventh and early twelfth centuries, and two rulers of that period, Władysław Herman and Bolesław III Wrymouth, are buried in the cathedral. The pedestrian Tumska Street links this historic quarter with the rest of the centre.
The Vistula is broad here, widened by the reservoir downstream, and two bridges cross it, one of them a modern cable-stayed span. Two Vistula bridges
The wide river is crossed twice, including by the cable-stayed Solidarity Bridge. Both bridges cut across the open water as long, thin lines and anchor the whole composition.
Riverside escarpment
The steep bank decides where the city could grow. It leaves a green strip along the slope and a crisp boundary between the built-up streets and the broad river below.
