Konz stands at the confluence of the Saar and the Moselle, a few kilometres upstream from Trier in Rhineland-Palatinate. The Saar arrives from the south, the Moselle runs past from the west, and the town fills the wedge of land between them and spreads onto the higher ground behind. Bridges cross both rivers, and rail lines follow the valley floors, so the map has a clear central knot.
The site has been occupied since Roman times. The remains of a late Roman imperial villa have been excavated in the town, which is a reminder of how close Konz is to Trier, once a residence of emperors. The slopes around the town are planted with vines, part of the Mosel wine region that includes the Saar valley.
