Bonn lies along the Rhine, which runs from south-east to north-west across the map. The compact old centre sits on the west bank, close to the water, and three road bridges link it with Beuel on the east bank. South of the centre, the city continues toward Bad Godesberg, and the Siebengebirge hills rise on the far side of the river.
The university occupies the former Electoral Palace in the centre, with the Hofgarten lawn in front of it. From there the long, straight Poppelsdorfer Allee leads to Poppelsdorf Palace and the botanical gardens, one of the clearest axes on the map. Further south, the former government district and the museum mile follow the river, now home to UN offices and federal ministries.
A Bonn map poster shows a city that was the capital of West Germany from 1949 to 1990, a role still visible in the government quarter by the Rhine. Bonn is also Beethoven's birthplace, and the house where he was born in 1770 stands in the old town. On the map, the river, the palace avenue and the old streets make a clear, balanced composition.
