Kouri lies in the Sikasso region of southern Mali, not far from the border with Burkina Faso. It is a rural town, and on a map it appears as a compact settlement of streets and compounds surrounded by farmland. The wider landscape is savanna, one of the greener and more agricultural parts of the country.
The street pattern shows how the town has grown over time. Clusters of compounds are linked by irregular lanes, and a handful of roads lead out to neighbouring villages and fields. There is no ring road or formal grid. The structure is local and organic, shaped by daily movement rather than by planners.
