Kuiya lies in the Hotan area of southern Xinjiang, in the belt of oases along the southern rim of the Taklamakan Desert. Settlements here depend on water flowing down from the Kunlun Mountains, and that dependence is written across the map. Roads, canals and field boundaries run in long, parallel lines, and nearly everything is arranged around getting water to the land.
From above, the oasis appears as a patchwork of narrow fields separated by rows of trees, with villages and farmhouses strung along the roads. The more built-up centre is small and compact, and the edge of the cultivated area is sharp: beyond the last fields, the land turns to open gravel and sand.
A Kuiya map poster presents this landscape in its simplest form. The black-and-white treatment reduces it to lines and spaces, so the drawing reads almost like a woven textile.
