Lahat is the seat of Lahat Regency in South Sumatra, set in the foothills below the Bukit Barisan mountains. The Lematang River winds through the area, and from above, the town follows its banks and the valley floor, with streets spreading out on the flatter ground and roads climbing into the surrounding hills. The railway to Palembang also passes through town.
The landscape around Lahat is well known for Bukit Serelo, a rocky peak with a distinctive finger-like shape that is often used as a symbol of the region. The wider highland area is also known for its megalithic sites, part of the Pasemah cultural landscape that archaeologists have studied for many years.
