Langru lies in the Hotan area of southern Xinjiang, on the band of land between the Kunlun Mountains and the Taklamakan Desert. On the map it is a classic oasis settlement. A network of roads, irrigation channels and strips of fields stands out sharply against the empty terrain around it. Beyond the green edge, the drawing simply falls silent.
Life in this part of Xinjiang depends on meltwater from the mountains to the south. Rivers and canals carry it across the gravel slopes at the foot of the range.
