Laon stands on a long, isolated ridge that rises sharply from the flat countryside of the Aisne. From above, the upper town has an unmistakable shape: a narrow crescent of streets following the crest of the hill, wrapped around a wooded hollow known as the Cuve Saint-Vincent. The lower town and the railway station spread out across the plain below.
The Ville Haute keeps much of its medieval wall and gates, and the streets inside are tight and winding. At its eastern end rises the Gothic cathedral of Notre-Dame. Its towers are known for their stone oxen, said to honor the animals that hauled the building stone up the hill. Laon was an important royal seat under the late Carolingians.
