Larache sits on Morocco's Atlantic coast, on high ground where the Loukkos River bends into the sea. From above, the town looks out over two kinds of water. The ocean runs along one side and the wide, curving estuary along another. The compact old medina and the port sit close to the cliffs, and newer quarters spread inland in a more regular pattern.
The town has a layered past. Just across the river are the ruins of Lixus, an ancient settlement linked in legend to the Garden of the Hesperides. In the twentieth century Larache was part of the Spanish protectorate, which left it a circular central plaza and Spanish-style streets. The writer Jean Genet is buried in the town's old Spanish cemetery above the sea.

A round plaza from the Spanish period sits at the junction of the old and new towns, and streets radiate from it. It is a small, perfect circle on the map.
