Latakia sits on a small bulge of the Syrian coast, and from above the first thing you notice is the port. Long breakwaters enclose rectangular basins, and cranes and quays form crisp straight edges against open water. North of the harbour the shoreline runs up toward the Ras Ibn Hani headland, while the city itself fills the flat land between the sea and the first low hills inland.
The site is old. As Laodicea, it was founded in the Hellenistic period by Seleucus I, and traces of that planning survive in the orderly blocks of the older centre, where a Roman tetrapylon still stands. Around this core the twentieth-century city grew in denser layers. Broad avenues cut outward, and newer districts filled the edges toward the university and the southern approaches.
As Syria's principal seaport, Latakia has always faced the water, and a Latakia map poster makes that relationship very plain: a dense field of streets that stops abruptly at a clean coastline. The older centre keeps something of the regular block pattern laid out when the city was Laodicea. This gives the heart of the map a steadier rhythm than the looser outer districts have.
