Arsuz lies on the southern shore of the Gulf of İskenderun in Hatay province, where wooded hills come down to the Mediterranean. The town occupies a narrow strip between the hills and the sea, and that setting shapes almost all of its map. There is a long coastline, streets that run parallel to the water, and roads that climb inland into the slopes.
The site is ancient. In antiquity this was Rhosus, a port on the coast between Cilicia and Syria, and for centuries the town stayed a small fishing and farming place. In recent decades Arsuz has become a popular seaside destination for people from Hatay and beyond. In 2013 it became a district in its own right, and summer houses and hotels now line the shore.
