Lecce is the principal city of the Salento peninsula in the heel of Italy. Its historic centre forms a rough oval, once enclosed by walls and now encircled by wide tree-lined avenues. Inside, the streets are irregular and tightly knit, opening suddenly onto squares and church forecourts before closing again into alleys.
The city is known for its Baroque architecture, carved from the soft local limestone called pietra leccese, and is sometimes called the Florence of the South. The Basilica di Santa Croce and the cathedral square are among its best-known sights, while in Piazza Sant'Oronzo part of a Roman amphitheatre lies exposed below street level.
