Taranto is known in Italy as the city of two seas. The Mar Grande, an open bay on the Gulf of Taranto, lies to the west, and the Mar Piccolo, an enclosed inner sea, lies to the north-east. The city occupies the strip of land between them, and its map is defined by water on almost every side.
The old town sits on a small island, once the tip of a peninsula, reached from the new town by a swing bridge over a navigable canal and from the west by a second bridge. South-east of it the nineteenth-century Borgo Nuovo spreads in a regular grid, while the naval base and the vast steelworks occupy the shores beyond.
The city began as Taras, a colony founded by Spartans in the eighth century BC, and its national archaeological museum holds much from that period.
