Lecco stands where the eastern arm of Lake Como narrows and flows out as the Adda River, framed by the limestone mountains of the Lecco Prealps. It is closely tied to Alessandro Manzoni. His novel The Betrothed opens with a famous description of this branch of the lake, and many places in the city are linked to the story.
The map shows a city pressed between water and mountains. The historic centre lines the lakefront, with a promenade and an old harbour, while newer districts climb the lower slopes toward the saw-tooth ridge of the Resegone. Several bridges cross the Adda at the southern end of the lake, among them the medieval Azzone Visconti bridge.
A Lecco map poster is defined by contrast: the long, smooth shoreline, the tight streets of the old town and the neighbourhoods reaching into the side valleys. Azzone Visconti bridge
Built in the fourteenth century, this many-arched bridge crosses the Adda where it leaves the lake. It is one of several crossings that connect the city to the opposite shore.
Resegone slopes
The mountain's saw-tooth ridge rises steeply behind the city. As the ground climbs, the streets thin out into switchbacks and scattered houses.
