Leshan lies where three rivers meet: the Min, the Dadu and the Qingyi. On the map the city sits on a wedge of land between the flows, and the wide channels form broad, pale curves that define its shape. Bridges cross in several places, and the streets of the older town follow the riverbank.
Across the water, cut into the red sandstone cliff of Lingyun Hill, sits the Leshan Giant Buddha. Carved in the eighth century, it is the largest stone Buddha in the world. It faces the confluence, as if watching over the rivers, and together with nearby Mount Emei it is listed by UNESCO.
The newer city spreads further into the flat land and low hills, with a looser grid and wider roads. A Leshan map poster shows a place defined by its rivers, with one of China's most famous monuments standing at their meeting point.
