Levanzo is the smallest of the Egadi Islands, a short ferry ride from Trapani on the western tip of Sicily. On a map its compact, uneven outline is almost entirely empty. A single village clusters around the harbour at Cala Dogana on the south coast. The rest is limestone hillside and scrub, with a few tracks heading to coves and the far northern shore.
The island is famous for the Grotta del Genovese, a cave on the northwest coast holding prehistoric paintings and engravings. Among them are animal figures thousands of years old. The cave is reached on foot or by boat, and it gives this quiet island an outsized place in the story of early Mediterranean art.
