Lida lies in the Grodno region of western Belarus, on gently rolling land where the small Lidzeika and Kamenka rivers meet. From above, the historic core clusters around the point where they join. The castle and a broad pond give the centre an open patch of water and green that stands out clearly against the surrounding blocks.
The castle was founded in the early fourteenth century under Grand Duke Gediminas of Lithuania. Its thick walls form an almost square outline that is still easy to pick out on a map. Around it, the town later grew into a railway junction. Several lines approach from different directions and cut long curves through the outer districts.
A Lida map poster captures that mix of old and industrial: a compact medieval anchor, a centre of short streets, and the sweeping arcs of track and ring roads beyond. Several railway lines converge on Lida. Their long, gentle curves cut across the outer districts and give the composition a sense of direction and movement.
