Olsztyn is the main city of Warmia and Masuria in northeastern Poland. On a map, water and woodland are the first things you notice. More than ten lakes lie within the city limits, a large city forest covers the northwest, and the Łyna river winds from south to north through the centre, making a tight loop past the old town.
The old town sits on a rise above the river. It has a Gothic castle and a market square surrounded by rebuilt houses with arcades. Nicolaus Copernicus lived in the castle for several years in the early sixteenth century while serving as administrator for the local cathedral chapter, and an astronomical table he drew on a wall there is still preserved.
An Olsztyn map poster shows how the city grew around its natural features. Housing districts fill the spaces between lakes, roads curve along the shores, and the forest leaves a large blank area on one side.
