Lido di Ostia is Rome's own stretch of coast, about twenty-five kilometres from the city centre on the Tyrrhenian Sea. From above, a long, nearly straight shoreline runs the length of the town. Behind it lies a regular pattern of streets and squares, much of it laid out in the early twentieth century, when Rome decided to give itself a seaside district.
The Tiber reaches the sea just to the north, and the ruins of Ostia Antica, ancient Rome's port, lie a short distance inland. To the south the built-up area gives way to the pine forest of Castel Fusano. A railway line links the Lido directly with Rome, and it is still how many Romans reach the beach.
