Lilienthal borders the city of Bremen to the north-east, on the low, wet land along the Wümme river. To the north lies the Teufelsmoor, a wide moorland once drained and settled by colonists, and the ditches and field strips it left behind still mark the map. The town itself stretches along its main roads, with residential streets and gardens branching off on both sides.
In the late eighteenth century, Lilienthal was home to the astronomer Johann Hieronymus Schröter, whose observatory made the town known across Europe. Today its link to Bremen is visible in a different way: the city's tram line was extended to Lilienthal in 2014, running as a single line along the main road.
