Loja sits in a long valley in the southern Andes of Ecuador, at an altitude of around two thousand metres. The city stretches north to south along the valley floor, following the courses of two rivers, the Zamora and the Malacatos, which run roughly parallel through the urban area before joining at the northern end of the city.
The historic centre is laid out on a colonial grid between the rivers, with squares and churches placed at regular intervals. Beyond it, the city climbs the valley slopes, where the streets become more irregular. Loja is often described as Ecuador's capital of music and culture, and it serves as a gateway to Podocarpus National Park in the mountains to the east.
