Lop county lies in the Hotan prefecture of Xinjiang, on the southern edge of the Taklamakan Desert, with the Kunlun Mountains rising to the south. Like other settlements along this ancient route, it depends on water flowing down from the mountains, and its inhabited area is an oasis, a green island of fields and villages surrounded by sand and gravel.
From above, the contrast is stark. Inside the oasis, irrigation channels and roads lined with poplars divide the land into a tight grid of fields and orchards. Outside it there is almost nothing. The Hotan region has long been known for its jade, silk and carpets, crafts that grew out of these oasis communities on the southern Silk Road.
