Seen from above, Lucca is one of the most legible cities in Italy. A continuous circuit of Renaissance ramparts, broad and angular with projecting bastions, encloses the historic centre almost completely, and the modern city spreads outward from that ring across the flat plain of the Serchio. On a black-and-white print the walls read like a heavy frame drawn around a finely detailed interior.
Inside the ring, the streets keep a clear Roman logic: a grid of lanes crossing at right angles, broken here and there by later churches and squares. The most striking shape is Piazza dell'Anfiteatro, an enclosed oval where houses were built into the curve of the old Roman amphitheatre. A Lucca map poster shows that ellipse clearly, a small ring set inside a larger one.
Lucca is known as the birthplace of Giacomo Puccini, and its walls, never needed for a siege, were later planted with trees and turned into a promenade that people still walk and cycle today. The Serchio curves past to the north, and the foothills of the Apuan Alps begin just beyond the edge of the frame.

Piazza dell'Anfiteatro keeps the elliptical footprint of a Roman arena, with houses built along its curve. It is one of the most distinctive small shapes in any Italian street plan.

Within the walls, straight lanes still cross at near right angles, echoing the Roman colony. The dense, regular pattern contrasts with the looser roads outside the ramparts.
