Modena, in Emilia-Romagna, has one of the clearest urban outlines in northern Italy. The historic centre is a dense, roughly pentagonal area bounded by the viali, the wide ring avenues that replaced the old city walls. Through the middle runs the Via Emilia, the Roman road that still organises cities across the region, straight as it has been for two thousand years.
At the heart of the city, the Romanesque cathedral, the Ghirlandina bell tower and Piazza Grande together form a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Modena is also known worldwide for traditional balsamic vinegar and for its motor industry. Ferrari's home at Maranello lies nearby, and Maserati is based in the city. The tenor Luciano Pavarotti was born here.
