Verona grew inside a pronounced loop of the Adige, which curves around the historic centre on its way down from the Alps. The Romans laid out their town within this bend in a precise grid, and the pattern still survives in the streets around Piazza delle Erbe, the old forum. From above, river and grid together give the city one of the clearest outlines in Italy.
Bridges stitch the two banks together, among them the Roman Ponte Pietra and the fortified Ponte Scaligero beside Castelvecchio. South of the old centre, Piazza Bra opens around the Arena, a first-century amphitheatre still used for opera each summer.
