Mairena del Alcor stands on Los Alcores, a low ridge that rises above the countryside east of Seville. On the map, the town runs along the high ground, its older streets gathered around a castle hill and its newer districts spreading down the slopes. Beyond the edge of the town, olive groves and farmland stretch out toward the Guadalquivir plain.
The Castillo de Luna, a medieval fortress restored in the early twentieth century, sits at the heart of the old town. Mairena is also known for its spring fair, often described as one of the oldest in Andalusia, with roots going back to the fifteenth century.
