Makuyuni is a town in the Tanga region of northeastern Tanzania. It lies on the lowlands west of the Usambara Mountains, a range of steep, forested highlands that rises sharply above the plain. The town grew along the main road through this area, and its layout reflects that: a strip of buildings and markets along the route, with lanes leading off to homes and farmland.
The land around Makuyuni is mostly agricultural, with small farms and scattered settlements spread across the plain. To the east, the ground rises quickly into the mountains.
