Malabo lies on the northern coast of Bioko Island in the Gulf of Guinea and is the capital of Equatorial Guinea. From above, the old centre sits on a headland beside a small, sheltered bay. The colonial-era grid of streets leads down to the harbour, while newer districts spread along the coast to the east and west.
Founded in the nineteenth century as Port Clarence and later known as Santa Isabel, the city retains buildings from the Spanish colonial period, including its twin-towered cathedral. To the south, the land rises steeply towards Pico Basilé, the volcanic summit of Bioko.
A Malabo map poster shows a strong contrast between the regular blocks of the old centre and the looser roads of the newer districts. The coastline forms a lively edge along the top of the map. In black and white, the bay, the grid and the rising land make a clear composition.

The city curves around a small bay on Bioko's northern coast. Its rounded shoreline and port area give the map its most recognisable outline.

South of the city the land climbs towards Pico Basilé. Streets become fewer and follow winding lines as they head inland.
