Malazgirt is in Muş province in eastern Turkey, on the high plateau of eastern Anatolia. Under the name Manzikert it gave its name to one of the most consequential battles in medieval history. In 1071 the Seljuk sultan Alp Arslan defeated the Byzantine army here and captured Emperor Romanos IV Diogenes, opening Anatolia to Turkish settlement.
On a map the town is compact. Streets form an irregular grid, and the older core is set around the historic fortress area. Around the town the landscape is wide and open. Farmland stretches across the plain, and the valley of the Murat River runs nearby. Roads cross the plateau toward Muş, Ağrı and Lake Van.
