Malindi sits on the Kenyan coast between Mombasa and Lamu, and its map is shaped first by the Indian Ocean. The shoreline runs in a long, gentle curve, with a narrow band of beach and reef-protected water in front of the town. Offshore, the protected waters of Malindi Marine National Park form a quiet blank space on a monochrome print.
The older part of town is a close-knit Swahili quarter of narrow lanes, small plots and mosques, built for shade and short walks. Around it, newer streets and resort plots spread along the coast in looser, more regular shapes. Malindi is linked to one of the best-known moments in Indian Ocean history. In 1498 Vasco da Gama stopped here and left a stone pillar, which still stands on a promontory near the shore.
