Manari lies in the interior of Pernambuco, in the semi-arid Sertão do Moxotó. The urban area is small and compact. A modest grid of streets gathers around the centre, and at the edges the roads quickly become unpaved tracks leading into open country. On a map the town appears as a tight cluster in a very large, quiet space.
That space is caatinga, the dry thorn-scrub landscape of north-eastern Brazil. Most of the municipality is rural, with scattered farmsteads, small reservoirs and tracks linking distant communities. On paper those tracks read as long thin lines that wander across the frame and occasionally meet at small settlements.
