Manatí sits on the northern coast of Puerto Rico, west of San Juan. The historic town centre is organised around a plaza with its parish church, and its grid of streets is compact enough to fit on a single print. Around it, the map spreads into newer neighbourhoods and the highways that run parallel to the coast toward the capital and Arecibo.
The town is known as La Atenas de Puerto Rico, a nickname tied to its long cultural and educational tradition. On the landscape side, the Río Grande de Manatí winds across the coastal plain to the sea, while the northern karst region rises inland in rounded limestone hills. Along the shore, Mar Chiquita is a well-known cove almost enclosed by rock.
