Mandeni lies on the north coast of KwaZulu-Natal, close to where the Thukela River, the largest in the province, reaches the Indian Ocean. On a map the river's broad lower course is a defining feature, curving across the southern edge of the area. The town and its surrounding settlements spread over the rolling land to the north, connected by the N2 highway up the coast.
The area is known for industry, including the Sappi Tugela paper mill and the Isithebe industrial estate, and for the sugarcane that covers much of the surrounding hills.
