Mapinga lies in Bagamoyo District of Pwani Region, on the coastal plain north of Dar es Salaam. The road to Bagamoyo passes close by, and the settlement has expanded along it as the city pushes outward. From above the pattern is mixed: older village lanes, newer rectangular plots, and open land that is still being divided up.
The Indian Ocean shore lies a short distance to the east. The flat land between the road and the sea is laced with tracks, gardens and patches of coastal scrub.
