Maposeni lies in the Ruvuma region of southern Tanzania, west of Songea. The landscape is highland country: rolling hills, farmland, patches of woodland and streams running in shallow valleys. The climate and soils support maize and other crops, and small farms dominate the scene.
The settlement is not a dense town. Homes, schools and churches spread along the roads and footpaths, with fields between them. A few main tracks connect it to Songea and to neighbouring villages, and smaller paths branch off to individual homesteads.
