Marchena lies in the campiña of Seville province. This is a broad, rolling farmland of olive groves, wheat and sunflowers. The town sits on a gentle rise, and its map shows two distinct layers: a tight, irregular medieval core on the high ground, and newer streets spreading out more regularly across the lower slopes.
Parts of the old walls survive, including the Arco de la Rosa, a horseshoe-arched gateway that is still the town's best-known image. Inside, the church of San Juan Bautista holds a noted series of paintings by Zurbarán. The dukes of Arcos also held Marchena and once had a palace here.
