This Matamoros belongs to Coahuila and forms part of the Comarca Lagunera, the metropolitan and agricultural region centred on Torreón. From above, the town is a neat grid of blocks surrounded by a flat, geometric patchwork of irrigated fields. The town takes its name from Mariano Matamoros, a priest and insurgent leader in Mexico's war of independence.
