Matsubara lies just southeast of Osaka city, within the continuous urban area that fills the Osaka plain. The land is flat, and nearly every part of the city is built up, so the map is made of very fine, closely spaced streets, the typical small-block fabric of Japanese residential neighbourhoods.
Cutting through this fine grain are major transport lines: railway routes running out of Osaka and large expressway interchanges whose curving ramps stand out sharply among the houses. The Yamato River runs along the north of the city, adding a single broad band of open space to an otherwise tightly packed map.
