Mbouda is the main town of the Bamboutos department in Cameroon's West Region, in the green highlands of the Grassfields. The terrain is hilly, and the map shows it: roads follow ridges and valleys instead of straight lines, and the town centre is a compact cluster where several routes meet. Around it, scattered compounds and farm tracks cover the slopes.
The Bamboutos Mountains, an old volcanic massif and one of the highest ranges in the region, rise to the northwest. Their fertile soils and cool climate support intensive farming, and Mbouda is an important market town for vegetables, potatoes and other crops grown on the surrounding hills.
