Medina del Campo sits on the broad wheat plain of Valladolid province, in Castile and León, and its name means the town of the field. The map is compact and fairly flat. It is organised around the Plaza Mayor, one of the largest main squares in Spain, and streets spread from it in an irregular web. The small Zapardiel river runs through town, separating the old centre from the castle side.
In the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries Medina held some of the most important trade fairs in Europe. They drew wool, cloth and bankers from across the continent, and the size of the square still reflects that past. Queen Isabella I died here in 1504. The Castillo de la Mota, a massive brick fortress, stands on a rise just outside the historic core and is plainly visible on the plan.
