Menen lies in West Flanders on the Lys, known in Dutch as the Leie, which forms the border between Belgium and France here. From above, the town and its French neighbour Halluin run into one another, with the river and the border line drawn through the middle. The older centre sits close to the water, and streets fan out north toward the countryside.
The town was once fortified, with defences remodelled under Vauban in the seventeenth century, and traces of that shape can still be read in the curve of streets around the centre. Its name is also known worldwide through the Menin Gate in Ypres, which marks the road that led from there toward Menen.
