Two lagoons
The Indian River Lagoon and the Banana River run along either side of the island. They give the map wide bands of water and define its long, slender outline.

Merritt Island Map Poster & Print
Merritt Island is a narrow landmass on Florida's Atlantic coast, in Brevard County, lying between the Indian River Lagoon to the west and the Banana River to the east. On the map it forms a long shape outlined by water on nearly every side, joined to the mainland and the beaches by causeways that cross the lagoons in straight lines.
The southern part is residential, with streets that end in finger canals cut for boat access, producing a comb-like pattern along the shores. Further north, development stops and the land becomes the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, which surrounds the Kennedy Space Center, home to the launch complexes of the American space programme.
A Merritt Island map poster is mostly about edges. The shorelines, canals and causeways create a detailed interplay of land and water, and the fine suburban grid in the south contrasts with the open marshland beyond. The result is a striking print that reads as clearly as a nautical chart.

Finger canals
Residential streets on the southern shores lead to narrow canals cut into the land for boats. From above they look like the teeth of a comb along the coast.
Refuge and Space Center
The northern half is largely wildlife refuge surrounding Kennedy Space Center. On the map, roads thin out and marsh edges take over, a sharp contrast with the suburbs.
