Milas lies inland in Muğla province, in southwestern Turkey, on a plain surrounded by low hills covered with olive groves. The town stands on the site of ancient Mylasa, an important city of Caria. It served as the early seat of the Hecatomnid dynasty until Mausolus moved his capital to Halicarnassus, the present-day Bodrum, on the coast.
The map shows two sides of the town. The historic centre is a tangle of narrow, irregular lanes that has grown over many centuries, while the newer districts spread out in broader and more regular streets. Roads leave Milas toward the coast and the airport that serves Bodrum, and outside the town the land breaks into a patchwork of orchards and fields.
