Aydın sits at the point where the Aydın Mountains drop down into the broad valley of the Büyük Menderes, the river the ancient Greeks called the Maeander. From above, the city climbs the lower slope in a band of streets, with the valley floor opening out to the south in a wide pattern of fields, orchards and irrigation channels.
Above the modern centre, on a plateau, are the remains of ancient Tralles, one of the notable cities of the Roman province of Asia. Below, the region is best known for its figs. Aydın figs are among the most widely exported in the world, and orchards fill much of the land around the city.
An Aydın map poster shows the city’s position clearly. Streets are tight and steep near the hills and become wider and straighter towards the plain. The railway and the main road run along the valley between İzmir and Denizli, drawing long lines parallel to the river through the landscape of western Anatolia.

The ancient city of Tralles occupied the plateau above modern Aydın, where its site still overlooks the valley from the northern edge of town.
