Manisa has a clear dividing line. To the south, Mount Spil rises steeply, with the old town packed against its lower slopes. To the north, the city opens onto the Gediz plain, where the streets become straighter and the blocks larger. Farmland stretches beyond. On a map, the mountain edge and the level plain make an unmistakable contrast.
In Ottoman times, Manisa was where young princes were sent to govern and learn statecraft, and several future sultans spent part of their youth here. Mosques and complexes from that period still stand in the older quarters. Each spring the city holds the Mesir festival, when a traditional spiced paste is thrown to crowds from the Sultan Mosque.
