Salihli lies in the broad valley of the Gediz River in Manisa province. The town sits on level farmland, with the main highway and railway running east to west through it. South of the centre the ground rises quickly towards the Bozdağ mountains, while to the north the plain stretches out towards the river.
A short distance west of the town are the ruins of Sardis, capital of ancient Lydia and the home of King Croesus. It is one of the major archaeological sites of western Anatolia, known for its gymnasium complex, synagogue and Temple of Artemis. The surrounding plain has long been known for grapes and other fruit.
A Salihli map poster shows a compact grid on the valley floor, crossed by long transport lines and surrounded by the rectangular patchwork of fields. In black and white, the pattern is calm and even, with the mountains suggested by the curving roads on the southern side.

The main highway and the railway run through Salihli towards İzmir and Uşak. They form strong parallel lines that define the long axis of the composition.

West of the town the road leads to the ancient Lydian capital. It connects the modern street grid with one of the region's best-known historic sites.
