Mirano lies in the Metropolitan City of Venice, on the flat, fertile plain between Padua and the lagoon. From above, its centre reads as an elongated core rather than a round old town, with the main square and its connecting streets stretched along the course of a small river. Around this spine, residential neighbourhoods spread out in a looser pattern, broken up by gardens, fields and the green grounds of historic villas.
Like much of this part of the Veneto, Mirano grew as a place where Venetian families built country residences, and several villas with parks survive.
